Tomahawk Director’s Report

Summer 2008 Recap
The summer program of 2008 was a success! Scouts of all ages experienced a fantastic summer program thanks to the efforts of the Tomahawk staff, volunteers, and camp staff alumni.

Tomahawk has been adding several new program features to strengthen program offerings for older Scouts. This summer Scouts were awestruck as they saw a newly constructed 60’ climbing tower. The climbing tower was constructed this spring by volunteers, staff members, and the camp rangers. It is truly an amazing structure.

In addition to the new tower older Scouts enjoyed unique programs including a golf driving range, low and high COPE, disc golf, and mountain biking. There is no shortage of adventure for Scouts at Tomahawk now.

Webelos Scouts enjoyed a fantastic summer program this summer. The Navajo staff was one of the most enthusiastic groups of staff members that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. The staff was creative, energetic, intelligent, and extremely well respected. Webelos experienced a broad range of activities including climbing, swimming, boating, bb-gun shooting, archery, nature, and even mini-golf.

Winter Camp
Our winter staff is busy working on program development for the 2009 winter camping season. We can’t wait to break out our cross country skis, snow shoes, and winter camping gear. Thanks to the generosity of the late Lawrence Gagner, the Snow Base program receives an allocation from an endowment fund to purchase new winter camp equipment. The Scouts and their volunteer leaders are outfitted with state of the art winter camping gear making the experience all the more enjoyable.

What’s New
Tomahawk recently acquired 567 more acres of land through the purchase of the Rindsig Dairy Farm. If you haven’t seen the property please make plans to visit Tomahawk during the next alumni day.

A new Welcome Center is being constructed at Tomahawk. This new facility will house camp history representing all generations of Scouts who have camped at Tomahawk. We are looking for artifacts to display in the new building. If you have any photos, patches, and TSR memorabilia to donate please contact us.

The alumni association is also working on the construction of a new camp entrance sign to welcome campers to Tomahawk. This is a replica of the camp sign from 1953 when Tomahawk was established. We are planning on having the sign ready for the 2009 season.

Thank you again to all of the volunteers, donors, and staff who continue to make contributions to Tomahawk to provide an outstanding summer camp experience for the youth we serve.
