from Mark McCabe

We had a great 2007 summer camp season at Tomahawk Scout Reservation. The camp staff and volunteers are already busy planning the 2008 Snow Base and Tomahawk summer camp programs.
First I’d like to reflect on a few of our outstanding summer camp accomplishments.

5,064 Boy Scouts attended Tomahawk

1,082 Webelos attended Navajo (an increase of 15% over last summer)

141 people participated in the week long High Adventure Sea Kayaking program on Lake Superior

497 Scouts participated in the COPE program (a new record for participants)

138 Scouts participated in the new T-2 high adventure program. This program was a series of one day activities including rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, COPE, and golf. The program was open for Scouts 14 years old and older. We had positive feedback from Scouts and ran a safe program.

Other significant accomplishments included:

Constructing a golf driving range, mini-golf course in Navajo, and an 18 hole disc golf course located near White Pine.

We also became the owners of the Rindsig farm which added 567 acres to Tomahawk at a cost of just over $4 million.

A special thank you to the many volunteers, donors, and staff who make a significant contribution to maintaining and improving the camp facilities in order to ensure a safe and meaningful camp experience for Scouts attending Tomahawk Scout Reservation

Snow Base
The winter camping season is well underway and with a cold and finally snowy winter so far we have had a great turnout at Snow Base. We are continuing to increase the variety of equipment we can provide units with the purchase of 30 additional internal frame backpacks, 4 new pull sleds for the extreme program, and a 30’ yurt now located near Little Mud Lake. We also increased the number of Spearhead Extreme guides to offer more opportunities for units to participate in the program.

The facilities of Snow Base have also been improved with a new covering of fiberglass on the sled chute which makes it a much faster ride. The Mud Lake area was further cleared to offer more campsite space and a new trail cut through the woods to allow quicker travel to and from the area. There are also plans with the purchase of the Rindsig farm to offer another campsite location for Snow Base on the new property for next year.

Updates for 2008 Season

Tomahawk had a record number of applicants and interviewees for the camp staff interview day on February 2 at the council office. This is truly a testament to the quality of program both current and former staff have made Tomahawk Scout Reservation known for.

We are also busy planning our summer camp program. Updates for 2008 include an expanded Bison ranch at the Rindsig farm, increased high adventure programming, and the construction of a new climbing tower to expand older Scout program offerings.

Thank you again to all of the volunteers, donors, and staff who continue to make contributions to Tomahawk to provide an outstanding summer camp experience for the youth we serve.
