Written after a staff raid on the Chippewa Mess Hall

The staff raid was a memorable event to the participants. It was celebrated in word and in song. It has been alleged that the posse leaders were Dave Fihn, Dave Franks, and Tom Campbell, all water front staff. It has also been attributed that they were aided by Don Kelsey, with help from other unnamed raiders. Does anyone want to own up to taking part in this caper and/or reveal the names of other raiders? Let us know and we will give you full credit for your participation.

NOTE: The statute of limitations has run out.

 1957 STAFF SONG
by Ralph Underhill
(sung to the tune of 'The Fox Went Out in the Middle of the Night')
O the staff went out in the middle of the night
they prayed for the moon to give ‘em light
for they’ed many a mile to go that night afore
they reached the food-o, food-o, food-o
they’ed many a mile to go that afore they reached the food-o.

They ran till they came to the dining hall
the door was locked so they went through the wall
they didn’t mind the guard’s at all ‘cause
the loot was all around-o, round-o, round-o, round-o they didn’t mind the guard’s at all ‘cause the loot was all around-o.

They went straight to the big walk-in
the milk and the meat were kept therein
and on that terrible night of sin
the chaplin joined right in-o, in-o, in-o and on that terrible night of sin the chaplin joined right in-o.

Ol Jim King jumped out of bed
and out of the window he stuck his head
cried Dale, Dale better get out of bed
for the staff is on the prowl-o, prowl-o, prowl-o cried Dale, Dale better get out of bed for the staff is on the prowl-o.

Oh, Jim ran till he got inside
the bread box it was open wide
there wasn’t a sweet roll left to hide
and the staff was on the trail-o, trail-o, trail-o there wasn’t a sweet roll left to hide for the staff was on the trail-o.

They ran till they came to their own place
and the coons they stood with a smile on their face
they said there’d better be no waste so we’ll eat it all-o, all-o, all-o they said there’d better be no waste so we’ll eat it all-o.

The staff they ate with all their might
they stuffed it in the rest of the night
at breakfast not a one was in sight
‘cause they layed in bed all day-o, day-o, day-o, at breakfast not a one was in sight ‘cause they layed in bed all day-o.
